Understanding the Colombian Marriage Visa
The Colombian Marriage Visa is a legal document issued by the Colombian government. It is designed explicitly for legally married couples who wish to live together in Colombia. To be eligible for the Colombian Marriage Visa, applicants must meet specific requirements, which may include:
Marriage
The applicant must be legally married to a Colombian citizen. Common marriages recognized in Colombia include civil and religious marriages registered with the appropriate authorities.
Validity of the Marriage
The marriage should be legally recognized and valid in both the country where the marriage took place and in Colombia.
Genuine Relationship
The couple must demonstrate that their relationship is genuine and not entered into solely to obtain a visa. This requirement is to prevent fraudulent marriages.
Benefits and limitations of the visa
The Colombian Marriage Visa offers several benefits to foreign spouses, including:
Work Authorization
Holders of the Colombian Marriage Visa are allowed to work in Colombia without the need for additional work permits
Dependent Status
The visa is dependent on the marriage remaining intact. If the marriage is terminated, the visa may be revoked, and the foreign spouse may need to leave Colombia.
Financial Capability
The Colombian spouse must have sufficient financial means to support the foreign spouse during their stay in Colombia.
Residency
The visa grants the foreign spouse the right to reside in Colombia for an extended period, typically up to three years.
Access to Services
The visa provides access to healthcare services, education, and other social benefits to Colombian residents.
Renewal Requirements
The visa typically requires renewal after a specific period, and applicants must meet the renewal criteria to maintain their legal status in Colombia.
